At a Turkish wedding the tradition is to give money in a very public way. During the reception, the bridal pair is invited on stage. The both of them wear a ribbon around their neck. One by one the guests come and pin money on the ribbons. The master of ceremonies publicly announces the amount of money the bride and groom receive from that particular person. All of this is caught on tape, so the newlyweds can watch the tape and make accurate notes on who has given them what amount of money. In Turkish culture it is common to give the same amount of money (or gold) back when the giver of the money marries themselves. Furthermore money and gold are a status symbol, and giving the newlyweds a good amount of money for their ‘start-up’ is seen as very important.
